Nana’s Bestie

From Lake Pleasant RV Park in Bothell, WA Mike and Georgia were able to visit with Aunt Peggy and her husband, George Futas in nearby Kirkland. Margaret Robertson (aka. Aunt Peggy) was best friends with Emma White (Mike’s mother) from nursing school. Their friendship lasted over 60 years. Aunt Peggy turns 90 this December! George is already 91! They are the youngest 90-somethings that we have ever met. They welcomed us so warmly, prepared a delicious feast of fresh salad, baked salmon with scalloped potatoes, and fresh asparagus and taught us how to play Rummikub 2.0! As we were beginning our game of Rummikub, Aunt Peggy’s daughter, Heather called from California to check on her mother and asked if we were paying the required toll (a game of Rummikub). We all laughed! Of course it was a joy to visit with them, eat delicious food and play a light-hearted game around the table. By the way, did I mention that dessert consisted of a smooth vanilla pudding topped with the freshest fruit salad and a Macadamia, chocolate confection from Costco? All this was nicely complemented with a hot cup of herbal tea, from a wide choice of yummy teas (my choice was Country Peach Passion).

We learned more about Peggy and Emma’s adventures traveling to Europe in their eighties. George and Mike shared common knowledge of Johnson controls used in air conditioning systems. I learned that BLT can mean Bending, Lifting and Twisting which are movements discouraged when you have bulging discs in your back (take care of yourself, Aunt Peggy). Mike shared a childhood story that when he was 7, his brother Russell was 6 and sister Peggy was only 4, they visited Aunt Peggy in Santa Cruz on a trip north to Washington State for Christmas. The children decided that they would rather let their parents go on and the kids would just stay with Aunt Peggy. It was funny/awkward, but the folks were able to convince the kids with Aunt Peggy’s help that their family should stay together. Mike remembered and laughed, but after visiting with Aunt Peggy and George, he can see why he felt that way. Here’s hoping that we meet again to play more rounds of Rummikub and eat lovingly prepared meals around the table late into the night.
